I spent 15 months working as a reporter at The St. Paul Journal. The paper serves a diverse, multicultural community, including three nearby First Nations reserves, which I regularly visited to cover stories.

So when Canada voted against the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People in 2006, I knew it was something my community needed to be made aware of. I collected so much information that I could have written a feature article, but I condensed it into this short op-ed piece and heard from multiple citizens that they appreciated my coverage of the sensitive subject.
